OpenAI Claims Solution to the Navier–Stokes Problem Using AI Agents

10.09.2026

OpenAI reported in its official report On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem that a system of approximately 10,000 autonomous AI agents found a mathematical solution to the Navier–Stokes equations — one of the seven famous Millennium Prize Problems — in 88 hours. The formal verification of the mathematical proof in the Lean language was completed in just 17 hours by the GPT-6 Astra tool.

The Navier–Stokes equations form the foundation of fluid dynamics, describing the motion of viscous fluids and gases. The core of the problem lies in determining whether these equations always have smooth (continuous) solutions. As highlighted by media outlets, including Hromadske’s coverage of OpenAI’s achievement, the company’s algorithms constructed an example of a finite-time blowup, thereby confirming the scenario of breakdown in smoothness.
