As mathematicians, we know that numbers have character. And the year 2026 is special — it is a “happy number”!

In number theory, a happy number is a number that eventually reaches 1 when replaced by the sum of the squares of its digits.

The year 2025 was marked by significant events in mathematics — from international recognition of scholars to historic breakthroughs in fundamental theories.

Outstanding Awards and Recognition

Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics — the prestigious 2025 prize was awarded to the eminent mathematician Dennis Gaitsgory for his fundamental contributions to the Geometric Langlands Program, in particular for proving the Geometric Langlands Conjecture in characteristic zero.

On December 24 and 26, 2025, the Department of Applied Mathematics hosted the defense of Master’s qualification theses for students of Specialty 124 System Analysis, which was held in a remote format.

The Examination Board heard presentations covering a wide range of current topics. The Board members noted the thoroughness of the research, the Master’s students’ ability to apply modern system analysis methods to solve practical problems, and the high level of presentation of the results. All theses were successfully defended and received high marks.

On December 23 and 25, 2025, the Department of Applied Mathematics hosted the defense of Master’s qualification theses for students of Specialty 113 Applied Mathematics, which was held in a remote format.

The Examination Board heard presentations dedicated to current problems in the modeling of complex systems and the development of algorithmic solutions for various fields of science and technology. The Board members noted the high level of preparation of the Master’s students and the practical significance of the results obtained. All presented works were successfully defended and received high marks.

On December 18, 2025, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine took a historic step for Ukrainian education and science by adopting Draft Law No. 10392 “On Academic Integrity” in its entirety.

For the first time, this document establishes a unified and comprehensive legislative framework for academic integrity within the education and science system.

On December 14, 2025, representatives of the Department of Applied Mathematics at NURE took part in the NURE Acquaintance Day event titled “NEXT GEN DAY: Your Route to the Profession of the Future”. The event gathered students from schools in the Shevchenkivskyi district and was dedicated to introducing schoolchildren to the educational opportunities offered by the university.

During the event, our lecturers, Vladyslav Parkhomenko and Mykyta Hvozdiev, conducted mathematical quests and quizzes. They presented the educational programs of the Department of Applied Mathematics, discussed prospects for professional development, and guided prospective students in choosing their future educational path.

The final student conference for participants of the Ukrtransgaz JSC program “Student Research” was held in Yaremche from December 9 to 11, 2025.

Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics was represented at the conference by Oleksandr Knysh (student of group PMm-25-1). He presented his work titled “Development of a Machine Learning (“Artificial Intelligence”) Model for Automated Processing/Interpretation of Well Research” (Scientific supervisor: V.S. Yesilevskyi, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Applied Mathematics at NURE).

On December 11, 2025, the Attestation Board of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine held a meeting where they approved the decision of the Academic Council of NURE to award Georgiy Mykolaiovych Yaskov the academic title of Professor of the Department of Applied Mathematics!
